Tips for preventing dryer vent fires:
- Always clean the lint trap (between EVERY load)
- If you have flexible plastic ducting, replace it! These are dangerous & violate building codes
- Never store volatile chemicals or rags near the dryer
- Use the cool-down period at the end of the cycle to prevent fire ignition
- Keep a fully-charged fire extinguisher in the home
- Have your entire Dryer vent ductwork professionally cleaned yearly or biyearly (especially due to Florida humidity)
Why do Florida homes need dryer vent cleaning?
Lint causes dryer vent fires
- Dust, clothing fibers and pet hair disperse during the drying process
- Unfortunately up to 40% of lint gets past the initial screens within the dryer
- This lint travels into the ductwork, often getting trapped in the vent line within the home
- Some homes have narrower vent work, based on who their builder was. This requires more frequent upkeep.
- In addition, Florida humidity causes lint to bind together and harden.
- Once this lint accumulates, it is extremely flammable.
Dirty Dryer Vents Increase Fire Risk
The National Fire Protection Association NFPA, reports nearly 16,000 home washer and dryer fires each year. These fires cause around 13 deaths, 440 injuries, and $238 million in property loss. Clothes dryers accounted for 92% of the fires. And the leading factor was attributed to a failure to clean, (accounting for one-third of dryer fires.)
